The descent into Denver was far bumpier than expected. Jake did his best to keep Alex distracted with stories, but he wasn’t very successful. Her pallor had shifted between white and green several times, and he worried that she might get sick. The flight attendant had been able to give them some hard candies to suck on, which had helped with the ear popping, but Alex was still a shaking mess. She’d ended up burying her head in his shoulder, letting him hold her tight during the landing.

As the plane taxied to the hangar, he tried to get her to sit up, but she refused to move until the plane came to a complete stop. At that point, she rose on shaky legs and stumbled against him.

Pulling her into a standing embrace, he held her before kissing the top of her head. “How on earth did you make it across the Atlantic?”

Alex sniffled and managed to laugh while Jake took the proffered tissue from the flight attendant so she could dry her eyes and blow her nose. “Drugs,” she reluctantly admitted. “I took a sleeping pill and slept nearly the whole way.”

Placing his hand on her neck, he gave it a light squeeze. “Princess, why didn’t you do that this time? It would have saved you so much anxiety.” Alex bit her lower lip as she tried to step away, but Jake wanted an answer. “Well?”

“I wanted to spend time with you, and I had hoped that it wouldn’t be so bad crossing over land—and it wasn’t. At least when you were distracting me in all those delicious ways.”

“Well then, the next time we travel, I will have to do a much better job of keeping you distracted the entire trip.” Jake chuckled at her blush and gave her a tender kiss, then helped her gather her things.

When they deplaned, she excused herself, telling him she wouldn’t be long, before she bolted for the nearest bathroom. He hoped she wasn’t throwing up the little food and wine she’d had on the plane.

As he settled down to wait for her, he saw the fuel truck leave the plane and the pilot reboard, then watched as the plane backed away from the hangar and headed toward the nearest runway. Guessing it was returning to New York for Bresi, he called the guy he’d left on him for an update. Apparently, Bresi had spent several hours with a lawyer and didn’t look too pleased when he finally left. He’d been followed back to his hotel where Jake’s guy had overheard him telling his driver that as soon as the plane returned, he’d be leaving for Toronto—the Canadian deal, Jake thought. He called Shawn Marshall to give him an update and let him know they’d arrived.

Shawn listened, then said, “I’ll be there soon. Bresi’s not the only one headed north—Trent’s taking his jet to Toronto, too.”
